How I Finally Ditched Plastic SIM Cards (And Saved $23 on Airport Wi-Fi)



Last July, I stood in Terminal 3 of Charles de Gaulle airport for 45 minutes, waiting to pay €35 for a physical local SIM card loaded with just 5GB of data. My wife stepped off the same flight, tapped her iPhone 14 Pro screen three times, and connected to the French Orange network for $12 using a digital plan. That was the moment I stopped ignoring the cellular settings menu and figured out how embedded SIMs actually operate.

An eSIM replaces the tiny plastic chip you usually slide into the side of your phone. Instead of a removable tray, Apple solders a programmable chip directly onto the motherboard during manufacturing. In the United States, Apple removed the physical SIM slot entirely starting with the iPhone 14 lineup. The digital profile handles the exact same network authentication duties, but you download it over the internet instead of waiting for a physical package in the mail.

The Real-World Setup (And My First Mistake)

Activating my first digital plan was not perfect. I bought a 10GB travel package through Airalo, received a QR code in my email, and immediately tried to scan it while standing in a hotel parking lot. My screen threw a harsh activation error. You need an active, stable internet connection to download a new profile from a carrier server. Without Wi-Fi, the setup fails completely. Once I walked into a cafe and connected to their guest network, my phone downloaded the profile in exactly 40 seconds.

The standard activation process involves pointing your camera at a carrier-provided QR code, or using iOS 16's Quick Transfer feature to move a number from an old iPhone to a new one over Bluetooth. You go to Settings, tap Cellular, and add the plan.

Why Running Two Numbers is Highly Practical

Once installed, the settings menu lets you label each digital profile. I keep my primary Verizon number labeled "Personal" and a cheap $15 prepaid plan labeled "Business."

Modern iPhones let you store up to eight different eSIM profiles, though you can only keep two active at the same time. I can assign my Verizon line to handle outgoing phone calls and texts, while forcing the secondary line to handle all mobile data. This setup is useful for international travel. You maintain access to your primary phone number so bank verification texts and two-factor authentication codes still come through, while the cheap local data plan prevents your home carrier from charging you $10-per-day roaming fees.

The Security Advantage and The Trade-offs

Moving away from plastic chips solves a major security vulnerability: physical SIM swapping. When your phone relies on a physical card, a thief can steal your device, pop the tray open with a paperclip, and put your chip into their own phone to intercept your password reset texts. Because an embedded chip is permanently locked inside the hardware, bad actors cannot physically remove your phone number.

However, this hardware integration creates a specific point of friction. If you drop your iPhone on the pavement and shatter the screen completely, you can no longer simply move your plastic chip to a spare Android phone in your desk drawer. To move your phone number to a backup device, you have to contact your carrier, verify your identity, and wait for them to issue a new digital activation code. If you are locked out of your carrier account or cannot receive the verification email, you will be stuck without cellular service until you visit a retail store.
