What's actually happening: these servers disguise your VPN traffic to look like regular HTTPS browsing, so deep packet inspection — the technique networks use to spot and block VPN connections — can't easily tell the difference. It's not just useful for heavily censored countries. I've also needed it on a corporate guest network that blocked VPN ports by default, and once on a university Wi-Fi that did the same thing.

Two honest caveats: not every provider offers this (check the feature list before you subscribe, not after), and it can shave off some connection speed since there's extra processing happening on top of the encryption you're already running.

Multi-Hop: Probably More Than You Need, But Good to Understand

Multi-hop routes your connection through two VPN servers instead of one — sometimes marketed as "Double VPN." Your traffic gets encrypted twice, and it passes through two separate physical locations before reaching its destination. I'll be direct: I don't use this day-to-day. It's slower, and for checking email or reading the news, it's overkill.

Where it earns its place is for people who genuinely need to make traffic correlation attacks harder — journalists working with sensitive sources, activists in high-surveillance regions, that kind of use case. The idea is that even if one server in the chain were somehow compromised, an attacker would still need to trace back through a second server in a different jurisdiction before getting anywhere near your actual IP address. For most of us that's not a realistic threat model, but it's good to know the option exists if your situation changes.
