Best Free AI Apps for Android in 2026 — Tested & Ranked

Last updated: October 2026 · Free limits, models and prices change often and differ by country. Check each app's current plan before you rely on it.

There is no shortage of AI apps on Google Play, and many of them are thin wrappers, ad traps or subscription bait. The six below are the ones worth installing first in 2026. They are made by established companies, they all have a real free tier, and they each do something a little different. This is not a ranking of one "best" app, because the right one depends on what you do all day.

Quick answer
  • Best if you live in Google apps: Gemini.
  • Best all-rounder: ChatGPT.
  • Best for long documents and writing: Claude.
  • Best for research with sources: Perplexity.
  • Best if you use Microsoft 365: Microsoft Copilot.
  • Best for quick designs: Canva.

Google Gemini: the one built into Android

Gemini is Google's assistant and has been replacing Google Assistant on many Android phones. It works with Gmail, Docs, Maps and Calendar, and you can open it with a long press of the power button or a voice command on supported phones. The free plan includes chat, image analysis and Gemini Live voice conversations, with caps on the most capable models. Which model you get for free changes often, so check the app. There is a cheaper "AI Plus" tier reported at about $4.99 a month before the full $19.99 AI Pro plan.

Choose it if your day runs through Google apps and you want the assistant one press away.

ChatGPT: the all-rounder

The ChatGPT Android app handles chat, voice, web search, file and image analysis, and image generation, with a small free allowance of generated images each day and usage caps that tighten at busy times. It doesn't integrate with Android as deeply as Gemini does. Paid options start with a "Go" tier reported at about $8 a month in the US, and Plus at $20.

Choose it if you want one flexible app for most things and already use it on a computer.

Claude: long documents and writing

Claude is free with daily usage limits on the Android app. Reviewers point to its handling of long documents and files, its writing, and the fact that features like creating documents and small apps (Artifacts) are included on the free plan. Free limits tighten when demand is high, and Pro is $20 a month or about $17 a month billed annually. If you use it on an iPhone as well, see How to Use Claude AI on iPhone.

Choose it if you write a lot, summarize long files, or want careful, readable answers.

Perplexity: research with sources

Perplexity works like a search engine with a chat interface, and every answer comes with sources you can open. The free plan covers unlimited basic searches, and Pro costs $20 a month. It's less suited to creative writing, and you should still check the cited pages, because an AI summary can misread a source.

Choose it if you want quick, checkable answers more than conversation.

Microsoft Copilot: for Microsoft 365 users

Copilot offers free chat, voice, image generation and camera-based help on Android. It makes the most sense if your work lives in Outlook, Word and Teams. Premium features are bundled into Microsoft 365 Premium at about $19.99 a month.

Choose it if you already use Microsoft 365 and want AI close to those apps.

Canva: AI for designs

Canva's free plan includes AI-assisted design tools, such as image generation and background removal, with some limits. It is not a chatbot, but it is the most useful free AI app here for social posts, flyers and presentations.

Choose it if you make visual content on your phone.

How to spot fake or junk AI apps

My earlier version of this article listed apps that turned out not to exist as described, so this section matters. Before you install any AI app:

  1. Check the developer. Prefer established companies or developers with a track record.
  2. Look at the install count and the newest reviews, not just the star rating.
  3. Read the permissions. A writing app doesn't need your contacts or SMS.
  4. Watch for subscription traps. A "free" app that asks for a card on the first screen is a red flag.
  5. Download only from Google Play, and avoid unknown APK files.
  6. Don't paste sensitive data like passwords, bank details or medical records into any AI chat.

Test them with 5 prompts

Run the same five prompts in two or three apps and note which one you'd actually use. Copy this template:

  1. "Summarize this PDF in five bullet points." (attach a real document)
  2. "Rewrite this email to sound friendlier, in under 100 words."
  3. "Explain how [a topic you're studying] works, as if I'm a beginner."
  4. "Plan a 3-day trip to [your city] with a budget of $[amount]."
  5. Take a photo of a product label or sign and ask, "What does this say, and is anything important?"
App Prompt 1–5 quality (1–5) Hit the free limit? Would I keep it?

FAQ

Are these apps really free?
Each has a free tier, with limits on usage, models or features. Paid plans raise those limits.

Which is best for students?
Any of Gemini, ChatGPT or Claude can explain topics and summarize notes. See Best Free AI Apps for Students for more.

Which is best for an Android phone specifically?
Gemini, because it integrates with the system and Google apps.

Do free AI apps keep my data?
Policies differ. Read each privacy policy, check whether chats are used for training, and avoid pasting sensitive information.

Can I trust the answers?
Use them as a starting point. For health, money or legal questions, verify with a professional or an official source.

My pick

Start with Gemini if you use Google apps and ChatGPT if you want one flexible assistant, then add Claude for long writing or documents and Perplexity for research. Use the 5-prompt test before you spend on a paid plan. Most people never need one.
