Best free-to-play mobile RPG games with no annoying microtransactions

Last updated: October 2026 · Prices, in-app purchases and drop rates change with updates and by region. Check the store listing before you download.

"Free-to-play" can mean very different things on a phone. Some games are genuinely free, some are free with optional ads, and some are free to download but built around paying for random character pulls. This guide sorts the popular options by how they make money, so you know what you are signing up for before you spend a single evening on one.

Quick answer
  • Fairest model, truly free: Vampire Survivors (free with optional ads, no in-app purchases).
  • Best no-pressure roguelike: Shattered Pixel Dungeon (free on Android per its listing, about $4.99 on iPhone).
  • Big open-world RPGs: Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail and Wuthering Waves are free to download, but they are gacha games. You can play without paying, but collecting every new character costs.
  • Before any of them: set a spending limit on your phone (steps below).

How these games make money

Vampire SurvivorsFree, optional ads, no purchasesYesNo way to remove the ad prompts
Shattered Pixel DungeonOpen source. Free on Android, paid on iOSYesHard, with permanent death
Genshin ImpactFree, gachaNoNew characters are expensive without spending
Honkai: Star RailFree, gachaNoSome endgame modes favor limited characters
Wuthering WavesFree, gachaNoRepetitive farming

Vampire Survivors: the fairest on this list

This is the cleanest deal here. The developer describes the mobile version as the full game, for free. It is ad-supported, but the ads are optional: you tap a button after a run if you want to watch one for extra gold or a revive, and nothing pops up on its own. It has no in-app purchases, plays offline, and runs on iOS and Android. One catch: as of the TouchArcade review, there was no way to pay to remove the ad prompts entirely, so if even an optional button bothers you, know that going in.

Choose it if you want short sessions and no wallet involved.

Shattered Pixel Dungeon: great, but not free everywhere

This is an open-source turn-based roguelike with several hero classes and procedurally generated levels. It is hard, and when your character dies, the run ends. The old version of this article called it free with no purchases of any kind. That needs correcting: on the App Store it is a paid app at about $4.99 with no in-app purchases listed, while the Android version is distributed free on Google Play. The Play listing also shows "in-game purchases," and I couldn't confirm what those are, so check the listing before you install. It works offline.

Choose it if you like tough, strategic games you can play in short bursts, and you don't mind paying a few dollars on iPhone for no pressure at all.

Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Wuthering Waves: free to play, but gacha

These three are big, polished RPGs, and all are free to download. They are also gacha games: new characters and weapons come from random "wishes" or "pulls" that cost an in-game currency, which you can earn slowly or buy with real money. So this is not "no microtransactions." It is "playable without paying, if you accept that you won't collect everything."

What you can expect, based on published guides:

  • Pity systems cap the bad luck. In Genshin Impact, a 5-star is guaranteed at least once every 90 wishes. When you hit that, there's a 50% chance it is the featured character, and if you lose the 50/50, the next one is guaranteed. Honkai: Star Rail works similarly (a featured character is guaranteed within 180 pulls after losing a 50/50), and a 2026 roundup lists Wuthering Waves at a guaranteed 5-star every 80 pulls.
  • Free currency exists but is limited. Genshin gives a fixed amount of Primogems from daily commissions, plus more from events and quests. Saving for the banner you want is the standard free-player strategy.
  • Roundups rank them differently. One 2026 ranking rates Honkai: Star Rail and Wuthering Waves higher for free players than Genshin, whose main caveat is that collecting new characters is expensive without spending. These ratings are one author's opinion, not a rule.

The main story and exploration in these games can be done without paying. The money pressure shows up around new limited characters and hard endgame modes.

Choose them if you want a big world and can enjoy the game with the characters you happen to get. Skip them if you hate the idea of fear-of-missing-out events.

Other free RPGs that roundups rate as friendly

The same 2026 gacha roundup also scores games like Limbus Company, Azur Lane, Arknights and Reverse: 1999 highly for free players. I haven't covered them in detail here, so check each one's store listing and current reviews before you commit. As a rule, the more a game pushes limited-time banners and PvP rankings, the more it rewards spending.

How to judge any free RPG in five minutes

  1. Look for the monetization line on the store page. "In-app purchases" with a list of prices that goes up to $99 means gacha or bundles.
  2. Search "[game] pity system." If there's no guaranteed top-tier reward, spending can be a bad bet.
  3. Check whether it needs internet. Offline games are almost always the fairest.
  4. Read the newest reviews, not the oldest. Monetization changes after launch.
  5. Watch for timers. Energy systems and limited-time banners are designed to nudge you to pay.

Cap your spending on iPhone

If you or a child will play gacha games, set limits before the first purchase:

  1. Open Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn it on.
  2. Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases → In-app Purchases and set it to Don't Allow.
  3. For a child, turn on Ask to Buy through Family Sharing so you approve every purchase.

FAQ

What does "truly free" mean for a mobile RPG?
You can finish the whole game without paying and without being blocked by timers or paywalls. Vampire Survivors and Shattered Pixel Dungeon (on Android) come closest.

Is Genshin Impact playable without spending money?
Yes, the main story and exploring can be done for free. Getting every new character is where spending comes in.

Are there good offline free RPGs?
Yes. Vampire Survivors and Shattered Pixel Dungeon both work offline.

Is gacha the same as gambling?
It uses random rewards, and regulators in some countries have looked at it, but rules differ by region. Treat it like any random-chance spending and set a limit.

My pick

If you want zero pressure, start with Vampire Survivors, and add Shattered Pixel Dungeon if you like deep, hard games. If you want a big RPG, try Honkai: Star Rail or Genshin Impact, set a purchase limit first, and play with the characters you earn. Don't spend until you've played a few hours and know you like it.
